The Copper Spring Ranch of Bozeman has consigned several Quarter Horses with highly regarded pedigrees to the February Billings Livestock Horse Sale on February 22-24. The CSR colts being sold at the February BLS Horse Sale were in the broodmares when the ranch bought them, according to the ranch manager. They are being sold because they are not part of the ranch’s current breeding program although they carry outstanding bloodlines and have a lot of potential in the western performance arena.
The sale, managed by Jann and Bill Parker, is held each month at the BLS sale barn with hundreds of horsemen from throughout the West in attendance. In fact, the sale is now one of the largest in the western half of the United States and has turned into a true “horsemen’s happening” with the scores of people on hand each day to study the horses, visit with friends, watch the sale and purchase animals.
The February catalog sale features “sons and daughters of money earners and champions” with over 550 in the catalog that is being placed on the website on February 14 and mailed on February 15, according to Jann Parker.
The lineup includes arena horses, rope horses, ranch and using horses, prospects, mares, stallions, ponies and young stock, Parker said.
There will be a preview of the barrel horses, cutters, saddle and roping consignments, with a lot of cattle available to work, on February 22 at 11 a.m. in the heated Horse Palace Arena at exit 437 on I-90. “We’ll show the barrel horses first, followed by pole bending, on to the cutters, saddle and ride horses, calf horses and team roping horses,” Parker said. “This is your chance to get up close and look at these horses and visit with the owners. Take the time to attend the preview and shop those sale horses. The actual sale begins at 6 p.m. on February 22, 12 noon on February 23 and February 24 at BLS in Billings. The loose horses sell at 9 a.m. on Sunday. In addition, the Montana High School Rodeo Association’s Stallion Service Auction is set for Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in the BLS arena. On Sunday, Cowboy Church is scheduled for 8 a.m.
CSR Ranch horses in the sale:
Joe Snickelfritz (Herbie):
Figure Four 318 & Four Jenny. Figure Four 318 goes back to Steel Bars on the top and Joe Hancock on the bottom. Four Jenny is King and Hancock on the top and Driftwood and King on the bottom.
The ranch reports:
“This four-year-old gelding has a very good handle. He’s been used about every day on the ranch in all directions. He’s covered a lot of ground outside moving cattle and horses. Herbie has been roped off of for a considerable amount of time and particularly likes to heel cattle. He’s good in the box and starts hard. He’s cowy enough to make the corner without direction from his rider. Along with a couple other horse we have up for sale, he is one with a go anywhere-do anything attitude. One of our rope horse trainers has picked this gelding as his favorite roping prospect.”
Sugar Beau King (Bucky):
Beau Bar Prestige & Go Te Lynn. Beau Bar Prestige has earned several reining points in the AQHA. Go Te Lynn goes back to Azure Te on the top and Sugar Bars on the bottom.
The ranch says: “Bucky is a very calm and eager to please gelding. He’s been used all over the ranch from doctoring cattle in the pasture to bringing in the recipient mares from the hills. He’s been started with reining basics and is a natural western pleasure prospect. Bucky has both breakaway roped as well as heeled cattle and is good in the box. He’s a favorite on the ranch because of his good nature and willing heart” He is also 4 years old.”
Lady Sugar Tanquery (Chili):
Cross Bell 905 & Ima Sugar Maiden. Cross Bell 905 is out of Tanquery Gin by Doc O’Lena on the top and Three Bars on the bottom. Ima Sugar Maiden goes back to Sugar Bars on the top and Doc Bar on the bottom.
Chili’s blood red sorrel color along with her conformation has turned many heads that have come through the ranch. She would make a great heeling prospect and is well started behind the heel-o-matic and cattle. She’s quiet and calm in the box and makes the corner well. This young mare has had miles and miles outside on the ranch as well and has an easy going nature. She is four years old.”
In addition, several mares, with outstanding bloodlines, were bought and then trained on the CSR Ranch near Four Corners and will be in the sale.
Here’s a look at the mares:
MP Zipz Moon Dancer (Moon):
Zipz Zachary & Dance Form. Zipz Zachary on the top goes back to Depth Charge on the top and Poco Bueno and Leo on the bottom. Dance Form is Three Bars on the top and bottom.
“Moon has been started on the barrels, breakawayed and been team roped on-both ends. She has a calm attitude but next to impossible to wear out. She’s willing to work all day and then some. She seems to catch everyone’s eye that comes through the ranch. She is six years old.”
Honey Gin (Honey):
Ginnin Road & GR Honeycomb. Ginnin Road is by Tanquery Gin whose is out of Doc O’Lena. GR Honeycomb goes back to Moon Deck and Three Bars.
“This palomino mare has a good handle on a lot of things. She’s super catty and will go down the fence and turn a cow back hard. She’s been used heading, heeling, breakaway roping and is ready to be tied down on. Honey has gathered cattle, branded and doctored out in the pasture. She’s been used in our day to day horse operation and is a great traveler. She has been one of the (go to) horses if you have a job that needs to be done. She is six years old.
Ginnin Babi (Rita):
Ginnin Road & Little Babi Freckles. Little Babi Freckles is Dash For Cash and Doc Bar on the top and Doc O’Lena and Sugar Bars on the bottom.
“Rita is a six-year-old sorrel mare who has had a strong start in reining and working cow horse. She’s been roped on in the big pen and her best feature is her ability to lock on to cattle when sorting. She has a good stop and a good turn around. This mare is well balanced and moves easily in the arena. She’s been introduced in the versatility ranch horse arena and just needs seasoning.”
