A symposium on equine health and nutrition is being sponsored by CSR Equine and Copper Spring Ranch on Saturday, Sept. 27 at the ranch’s indoor arena.

Dr. Gary Pusillo, one of 12 certified equine nutritionists in the United States, is the featured speaker.

The event begins at 8 a.m. with coffee, doughnuts and muffins. The symposium starts at 9 a.m.

The audience will be hearing from Alan Woodbury, of Woody’s Performance Horse Feeds when he introduces Dr. Pusillo.

Pusillo holds a BS degree in animal husbandry from Delaware Valley College of Science and Agriculture, an MS in animal production and a PhD in animal nutrition/production from Iowa State University. He is a registered feed microscopist, a Certified Professional Animal Scientist and a board certified member of the American College of Animal Nutrition.

Recognized not only for his work with horses, goats, dogs, calves, pigs, dairy cattle and exotic species, Pusillo’s expertise in direct-fed microbials and nutraceuticals is well recognized throughout the feed industry. His reputation for innovation and cutting-edge formulations are legendary. He was the first nutritionist in the country to be licensed to practice on race tracks.

Along with a unique, intense educational background and a wide scope of practical experience, Dr. Pusillo has owned and managed his own farms. Currently, he and his wife, along with their three children, raise purebred Percheron draft horses, with which they farm organically.

Dr. Ellis Farstvedt, D.V.M., MS, Diplomat CVS, a nationally recognized and boarded equine sports surgeon from CSR Equine, is the first speaker on the agenda during the program.

Farstvedt is discussing OCD and how nutritional and mineral supplements affect foals before and after birth. He also plans to provide the latest information on angular limb deformity (ALD). In addition, CSR Equine’s Dr. Lisa Baller, D.V.M, C.V.A., and a United States Equine Federation Veterinarian, is giving an equine acupuncture demonstration during the morning.

CSR Equine is a state-of-the-art equine medical and surgical center that is located a few miles west of Four Corners, just off Norris Road. In addition to serving the ranch operation, CSR Equine is open to the public and functions as a referral hospital that provides a broad range of reproductive services, surgical options and emergency medicine treatments.

The clinic provides lameness and sports medicine therapies, advanced imaging and technology, acupuncture and general veterinary care.

Copper Spring Ranch, owned by Klein and Karen Gilhousen and managed by Gary and Sandie Metcalf, raise American quarter horses that carry the genetics of the top performance, futurity and ranch horses in the world. One of the key objectives of the ranch is to sponsor educational programs that help to foster the development of a trend-setting equine industry in Montana.
